Final Project: National Socialist Population Policy   Leave a comment


At the end of World War One, Germany was in bad shape. The so-called “Spirit of 1914” had been killed off by the time of the severe food shortages of 1916-1917’s “Turnip Winter,” and in November 1918-January 1919 the sailors and workers had a massive strike, and toppled the Kaiser. Germany had surrendered unconditionally to the Allied forces. Humiliated and near-starved, the Germans were forced to accept heavy disarmament, pay harsh reparations towards the victors, and cede several territories of German-speaking people to the Allies. The new German government, established in the town of Weimar, was considered weak and unable to cope with crisis.

Where a decade previously, a woman might stay home and raise three or four children, under these circumstances women entered the workforce sooner and stayed in the workforce, even after marriage. They had one or two children instead. In the years following World War One the population remained around the same level — a little over 60 million people.

When the Nazis rose to power in January-March of 1933, one of their strongest policies was population control. They wanted not only more Germans born, they wanted to ensure that it was the right Germans. They went about enforcing this policy three way: encouraging women to stay home and raise children; to separate the unwanted members of society, most notably the Jewish population; and to simply kill those they didn’t like.

This is an excerpt of a speech given by Adolf Hitler, in which he gives his opinion on women’s involvement in politics, the military, and society. He expresses the view that a mother who properly educates her children does more for society than a working woman. The largest and therefore most-used word is obviously “woman”, followed by “want” and “children”. The word “mother” is smaller than I would have expected, while the word “work” is a lot larger. This implies that the speech focuses on the idea of motherhood as work.

The focus was to keep women in the home, not by making it difficult for her work outside the home, but to make it easy for her to stay at home. Women with children, whether married or not, received tax benefits and stipends from the government so she could focus on the children.

But even while they worked to get true German children born and properly raised, they worked to get rid of the Jews, with their International Jewry and their outsider Jewishness. If you look at the first chart above, you can see how many Jews were actually in German society; their population amount is the blue line along the very bottom. About 12,000 Jewish men died for the German cause in World War One, and their overall population remained in the lower-mid 500,000s throughout the Weimar government years. Obviously they hoped to overwhelm true Germans through sheer numbers.

In the early years of Nazi campaigning, with their posters and through Adolf Hitler’s speeches, the Nazis made their anti-Semitic viewpoints clear. With Hitler’s appointment to Chancellorship in January 1933, 37,000 simply saw the writing on the wall and simply left.

The Nazis first singled out the Jews in society. They claimed that all Jews had large noses and oddly-shaped left ears, so Jews had to keep their left ears exposed. They had to wear a yellow Star of David on the breast of all of their clothes, with the word JUDE stamped in the middle.

In September of 1935, the Nazis enacted a series of marriage laws, stipulating who could and could not marry each other. A person’s race was determined by their grandparents. If you had three or more Jewish grandparents, then you were Jewish. If you had two Jewish grandparents, you were half-Jewish. If you had one Jewish grandparent, you were full German, or Aryan, with a few clauses. If none of your grandparents were Jewish, you were full Germans and did not have to worry.

A full-blooded Aryan man could marry a full-blooded Aryan woman. If you were half-Jewish, you could only marry a full-blooded Aryan, and your marriage had to receive special dispensation from the state (if the woman was the half-Jew then there was less concern). If one of your grandparents was Jewish, then you could only marry a full-blooded Aryan with no Jewish ancestry, in the interest of ensuring that you assimilate fully into German society.

These laws also affected domestic workers. An Aryan woman under the age of 60 could not work in a Jewish household, and a Jewish woman could not find work in an Aryan household at all.

The Nazis also enacted a series of boycotts of Jewish stores and businesses in the early parts of the regime. These went either unnoticed by the general population, or caused more business for the Jewish businesses, as gentiles tried to show support for their Jewish neighbors. On August 9, 1938, a Jewish youth named Herschel Grynszpan assassinated a low-ranking German diplomat named Ernst von Rath. That night, Nazi Stormtroopers, dressed in civilian clothing, attacked Jewish businesses and synagogues all over greater Germany, breaking glass, looting, burning, and arresting any Jews or civilians who protested. They threw children out windows, and arrested business owners for the damage wrought to their own storefronts. The ferocity of the attacks became known as Kristallnacht, or Night of the Broken Glass. 30,000 Jews were arrested, most of them with some sort of prior record, even if the record was a simple traffic ticket.

On January 20, 1942, Nazi officials came up with their own Final Solution to the Jewish Question. They had already forced the remaining Jews to live in ghettos, walled off from the rest of the country. They had executed thousands of Jews already, leading them to the countryside, forcing them to dig pits, then having them strip completely naked and then turned machine guns on the prisoners. This did not have the effect they wanted; this was a huge waste of time and money, and it turns out that Jews, when forced to dig their own graves, strip naked, and face their own deaths, tend to look like miserable, starved human beings attempting to die with dignity, or just simply cried. Mothers would cradle their children, men would comfort their family, little old ladies would comfort the young ones.

And so the Nazis created death camps. They did not tell the Jews where they were going; they simply told the Jewish leaders that they were going away, and the Jews themselves decided that they were going to a forced labor camp, and told their fellow Jews to pack accordingly. The map above shows all of the concentration and execution camps in the immediate German area, as well as the famous Auschwitz-Birkenau near Krakow, Poland, and a camp in Belgium. Other than the camp in Belgium, you’ll notice that all of the camps are towards the eastern side of Germany. Eastern Germany had less people overall, and was a more rural, agricultural area. There were certainly towns and people living near these facilities, but the fact that these camps were kept away from most of the population of Germany certainly tells a story on its own.

Healthy Family -- Healthy Children!

Jews were certainly the largest population persecuted by the Nazis, but there were others in the 6,000,000 eventually executed. Political prisoners made up a large population of the prisons. Gypsies, or Roma, were round up and executed, around 250,000 in all. It’s difficult to say how much of an effect this had on the overall Roma population, as their nomadic lifestyle prevented a true census from taking place. Around 50,000 homosexual males were also executed. Because they refused to have sex with a woman, they could not be fathers, and therefore had no place in Nazi society. Homosexual women were not persecuted, as they were still capable of bearing children and raising them.

Were the Nazis successful in their attempts to control the population? Yes. Starting from Hitler’s rise to power in January 1933, to the start of the Soviet counter-invasion in the fall of 1943, the general German population rose from the flat 60 million to 80 million people — that’s a rise of 2 million people each year. In that same time period, the Jewish population dropped from 523,000 to 20,000 people. By April 1945, as Soviet tanks rolled in and American planes fired into Berlin daily, as Adolf Hitler swore that the German people had failed him and that they were going to die with him, the population of Germany had fallen again to around 65 million people. The population, their numbers and hopes, had risen with Hitler; and now they were going to fall again.

In 2010 the population of Germany had risen again to around 81 million people, with 119,000 of them being Jewish. Hitler, and the rest of the Nazis, were wrong about the German people failing without them. The Germans and the Jews live on.

Technically I already had a map, but this is a map that’s related to my new topic. Consider this a rough draft, as I need to edit the names and add a little bit of background information to each dot. But. I pretty much made a map of Nazi concentration camps because I couldn’t think of any other thing to make a map of. I was surprised to see a story in there. Notice that, other than the one camp in Belgium, all the ticks are in Eastern Germany — the more rural, less-developed part of Germany. Farther away from people and civilization. I’m not saying no one saw these camps — lots did — but less people saw these camps than if they had been situated more evenly across Germany.

After turkey and mashed tatoes had been eaten, after Charades had been noisily taught to my grandfather’s girlfriend, we all settled back into quietude. My uncle Steve settled down to watch the Ravens play the 49ers. Grampa and his girlfriend went to their bedroom, as it was way past bedtime. My twin sister, Lacey, went to investigate the space heater. Dad went to wash dishes. Mom continued sitting in her chair, looking sleepy.

“Mom,” I said. “Let’s say I was hit by a bus tomorrow.”

“I would be very sad,” she said.

“Yes,” I said. “But what would you do with my online stuff? My twitter feed — I mean, my facebook feed? My livejournal?”

“I barely even know what a twitter feed is,” Mom said.

“I haven’t updated it in months,” I said. “What about my facebook? Or my livejournal? Would you want to access that?”

Mom thought for a moment, then said, “Yes. It’s a part of you, a part of your creativity. I would want to be able to access that.”

“How would you get at my information, though?”

“I guess you could put it in your will.”

I don’t have a will. I thought about this for a moment.

“I have a friend,” Mom said. “An acquaintance, really. He died about two years ago. And it’s weird. It keeps saying, ‘You have six friends in common’, and what would they do with that friend request? It’s morbid. Why don’t they delete it?”

Next I asked my twin sister Lacey.

“Lacey,” I said. “Let’s say I was hit by a bus tomorrow. What would you do with my facebook account and my livejournal?”

“Are you planning on throwing yourself in front of a bus tomorrow?”

“No, it’s for class.”

“Oh,” she said. “I guess, yeah, I’d use your facebook and your livejournal. It’s how you keep in touch with people right? So I’d arrange your funeral and stuff like that through facebook, yeah.”

“What about after that?”

“I guess I’d download it and delete it,” she said. “It’s kind of weird, you remember my friend Paul? He died like two years ago, and his family still hasn’t deleted his account. I still get updates.”

“Yeah,” I said.

I approached my dad, washing dishes.

“Is that china?” I asked.

“No, the dishwasher is full.” He gestured at the dishwasher, which was currently running.

“Dad,” I said, “Let’s say I died tomorrow. Would you want access to my online stuff?”

“Yes,” he said, almost immediately. “It’s a part of you after all. Losing it would be like losing you.”

“Oh,” I said.

“There was a lawsuit a couple years ago,” he said, scrubbing at a dish. “A family wanted access to their son’s email account, but Verizon wouldn’t give it to them. They asked what they were planning on doing with the account, and Verizon said they were going to delete it after sixty days or a year, I forget. They said that they might as well give their son’s email to them, but Verizon refused. So they sued them. I forget the result.”

“Interesting,” I said.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!   Leave a comment

I spent my Thanksgiving morning researching the mass deportation and execution of the German Jewish population! Then I went and made charts of my data. I asked questions of the room as I was doing so. My Jewish grandfather was massively confused. “Aryans include muslims,” he kept saying. “We’re talking about Nazis,” we kept explaining.

This was the first chart we made. Jews actually made up about 1% of the population of Germany. They numbered in the hundred thousands while the actual German population was in the ten millions. At my boyfriend’s suggestion I made a modification to my chart:

This is so you could see what I was getting at: the dramatic increase of overall German population, thanks to economic boom and Nazi encouragement to procreate, while you see the effects of mass deportation and execution of the Jewish population. All on one chart! ISN’T THAT CHEERY? ENJOY YOUR TURKEY EVERYONE! GLUCKLICHE TAGE DANKT ALLEN!

According to spell check, “uncensor” isn’t a word but “ginormous” is.   Leave a comment

The cool thing about the internet is the hypertext, and the ability to click links within articles. I know that sounds pretty obvious, but still. While the article about Google and Adobe and others getting hacked by China was pretty scary, I found this article, linked to by the scary article, to be really interesting.

Basically, in order to be able to operate in China, Google allowed its search results to be censored there. But after the attacks (from China), Google decided to un-censor itself.

As a ginormous company, Google operates as an independent country, basically. I remember listening to NPR about this earlier this year…I guess in response to the attacks? Or maybe they were also discussing Facebook? Anyway, the government has to deal with large, multi-national corporations just the same as they have to do with other governments.

I wonder if, in 100 years, history students will be learning about the founding of Google in school. And the struggles in China. Well, presumably, they’ll be studying China. But will they learn about Google’s struggle in China? I’d have more of an idea if I listened to NPR more regularly.

Also: there’s, uh, no screensaver tab on my Properties menu? Guys?

So “ginormous” is in the dictionaries. That still doesn’t explain why “uncensor” isn’t. It should be obvious, right? I’m not insane?

It’s called Ragnarok Proofing by the way, a very interesting topic   Leave a comment

First things first (obviously). My topic is going to be the Nazi population control techniques, including their persecution of the Jews, their philosophy on motherhood, and actual population statistics to see how well they did.

Second things second. How would I preserve [insert important topic here]? It says on the syllabus “Create a preservation path, describing any hardware, software, and processes needed, for your family‚Äôs historical record” but Prof Cohen said in class that it just had to be anything that was important to us.

I admit that my family’s genealogy is important to me, and will be one of the main topics in my autobiography that I’m totally going to write someday. I feel like bringing this up right now:

This is a photo of my parents at their wedding. Why is only my mother’s face in there, you may ask. Where is my father’s face? The answer is I don’t know. I’m already working from corrupted data, you see.*

I have gathered:

Census data from 1850-1930, every ten years, except for 1890 obviously (*shakes fist at fire god*)
Civil war records on Richard Hobson Cofer, Confederate Soldier and Surrenderer Extraordinaire
Photographs and letters on my great-great-grandfather Herman Handke
Attempted immigration form, filled out by Laura Handke and her second husband
Draft Cards for my great-great grandfather and my great-grandfather Joseph William Hanchers
Death Certificate of Joseph William Hancher II

This is quite a lot, considering I did it all in a genealogy binge over the course of three months.

Most of it is in paper format, on typical inkjet paper, printed at the National Archives or at my boyfriend’s apartment. I also have a digital copy of my family tree, but for the most part my genealogy records are tangible. Census data is saved in the National Archives’ database. I have no idea how they save it or intend to preserve it. They also have microfilm reels of RH Cofer’s Civil War documents. I looked on their website to see if I could get an idea what efforts they were taking to preserve their data. The first thing I spotted was a typo:

In addition, the Conservation staff monitors the environmental conditions in Arvhives’ buildings in the Washington, DC, area; provide preservation training to Archives employees, contractors, and vendors who handle records; provide for the preservation of documents on exhibit in the Washington, DC, facilities; and, furnish technical advice and assistance to ensure the preservation of items lent for exhibition.

That was from the paragraph on the Document Conservation Laboratory. The relevant part, I think, is in their second section, Special Media Preservation Library.

is responsible for reformatting and duplicating records created on textual and nontextual formats. This includes duplicating motion picture film, still photos, microfilm, and sound and video recordings; microfilming paper records; reformatting audio and video recordings in obsolete formats that cannot be used on currently-available playback equipment; and, generating digital images of records. These program activities result in the removal of fragile records from use, while still providing access to their informational content by capturing the information in a new format.

If I’m allowed to believe anything I hear on NPR, a lot of what they do is this, preserving and digitizing old analogue records. Some employees aren’t a fan, I guess because it’s gruntwork? I don’t know, but their employee satisfaction numbers are the lowest among government workers.

I’m not going to lie: I really like microfilm. I think it’s a good, simple system. I think that in the future, After the End, post-Ragnarok and -Resurrection, the few meebly humans who are left to repopulate the earth will eventually be able to figure out that you just have to shine a light through the film and then blow it up with a microscope. I would like my records saved in microfilm format. My autobiography, my choices pictures of my family, pets, and art, my genealogy records, I would like all of that saved in microfilm format, and kept in a vacuum tube.

They’ll be left with no idea what my dad looked like on his wedding day though. Just saying.

*Mom insists that this is just a snapshot and that there’s a real picture of my parents cutting their wedding cake somewhere, BUT I DON’T BELIEVE HER

I’m reading Roy Rosensweig’s article about preservation of the internet for future historians, and two things come to mind:

1) Why are we bothering?
2) Will we still be able to read the text?

I noticed that while he’s going into excellent detail about the search for the how of preserving the internet for future historians, he hardly ever goes into the why. Is it because he assumes that anybody who would read his article would naturally agree that the internet is a thing worth preserving?

There are things on the internet worth preserving, I agree. Emails have replaced letters and memos. We don’t want to lose those. Specific historical projects, notable blogs, (the entirety of twitter), but, well, let me show you a screenshot from one of my favorite comics, Dr. McNinja.

In case you don’t want to look*, the human resistance managed to print out the internet — the entire internet — before dinosaurs shut down the internet for good. Dr. McNinja has to research and find something that will help the humans in the upcoming battle against the Brontosauran president. He finds himself surrounded by forum comments, in book form, by one guy, on the topic of Transformers. Which takes up at least that wall.

While this works as a good metaphor for the difficulty of preserving the internet, it also leads one to ask — who cares what Sephiroth92 has to say about Transformers? I admit that my personal livejournal isn’t of interest to anyone except me, the future writer of my autobiography (after I finish my genealogy research). Will the historians of the future really care if one day I found my lizard cute because he stuck his tail up while he was eating, and the next day I swooned because he fell asleep on my lap? How many pictures of clouds does the future really need?

As for my second question, I ask that because the language of the future is of particular interest to me. English is still evolving, even though we’ve managed to standardize it. I admit I found Pride and Prejudice difficult to read the first three first time I ever read it, and that book was only written two hundred years ago. What came across as light and fluffy reading in 1813 comes across as stiff, overly formal, and ridiculously verbose (and only sometimes she does it on purpose for a joke!). People need training to read Shakespeare. We actually have to translate early English. Language evolves, right?

In 300 years the America we know today will be gone. What will be their cultural values? What will they read “ur so gay lol” as?

There’s a project. It’s about the signs we should post around the nuclear waste facilities way off in the west. Nuclear waste has a huge half-life. Since we don’t know who will be living in America in 300 years, we need to find a way to warn them about this deadly chemical that will remain deadly for thousands of years.

Would they see a biohazard…or an angel? If they see a sign that depicted someone touching the chemicals, then falling sick and dying, would they think “that’s superstitious nonsense”? Would they see these data servers, carrying our archives of the internet, and think them of any value? If all the electricity is gone, what good is keeping the internet around, anyway?

*I recommend you do — or check out the original comics, they’re pg. 40-41 of “Futures Trading”. I’d start from the first comic though.

So I’m supposed to do a chart, yes? Wow am I behind. Anyway, today in History of Germany class I wondered if there was a chart on the population of the various German minorities post-WWI, during the Weimar Republic, and then at various points in the Nazi regime, and then finally post-WWII. Then I thought, “Well why don’t I just make one?” So I am.

I’m going with the ethnic names of Jews, Afro-Germans, Gypsies, Homosexuals, and Aryans. I thought briefly about calling Aryans “Germans”, but then I realized that all of them are, in fact, Germans, so I went with Aryans because I couldn’t think of a better name.

Obviously there are difficulties in this project, in data mining of course, but also, well, the text spells it out nicely here:

According to the census of June 16, 1933, the Jewish population of Germany, including the Saar region (which at that time was still under the administration of the League of Nations), was approximately 505,000 people out of a total population of 67 million, or somewhat less than 0.75 percent. That number represented a reduction from the estimated 523,000 Jews living in Germany in January 1933; the decrease was due in part to emigration following the Nazi takeover in January. (An estimated 37,000 Jews emigrated from Germany during 1933.)


In case you’re wondering, January 1933 was the official Nazi takeover of Germany.

So if I wanted to look at the Jewish population, do I use the January 1933 amount, or the June 1933 amount? Thus far the only other data point I’ve been able to find is from another article on the same site, listing the 1925 German Jewish population as 564,973.

Hm hm hm hm hm.

Another article by the same site lists the 1933 Jewish population as 565,000. What’s up with that, guys? Maybe I should try a different site.

Presentation on Zombies   Leave a comment

First of all, before I get started, someone has put the entirety of Max Brooks’ Zombie Survival Guide online, in powerpoint form. Not like what we saw in class, with the Gettysburg Address, but the actual book itself. I’m pretty sure that violates copyright big time.

Anyway, I decided to make a powerpoint presentation about the basic tools necessary to survive the zombie apocalypse. I admit this is because I was a zombie for Halloween, so that sort of thing is still on my mind.

I always noticed that students tend to hide behind the podium and click the “next” button on their powerpoints, so when I started having to make presentations, I made an effort to not be behind the podium. I can’t depend on the slides to make the point for me. My language and gestures had to do that instead. The slides instead became where I put my visuals. Whatever point I’m going to make, I put an accompanying picture or clip art, and a few words. This reminds me of what the heck I’m going to say next, and people have to pay attention to me and not my words.


So my first slide is just a picture of four examples of what you can wear in the zombie apocalypse, two bad and two good, two male and two female. Here I would point out each example of what is good and what is bad on each outfit, and why they wouldn’t work well in a survival situation. This would be a good way to introduce the setting and necessities of a zombie apocalypse.


This slide I’m super disappointed in, but it gets the point across. It’s just not pretty. Here I would go into further detail about what should go into a bug-out bag, and what sort of supplies you should keep a look-out for. Also I would mention weapons; they should be melee weapons and capable of more than one task, hence the shovel and the crowbar.


I’m still not sure if this should go first or last. It does cover material from the last two slides (rules 4 and 5 specifically), but it also mentions more general lifestyle rules, which I can jump from and go into more detail on. I would spend the most time on this slide.

If I had to choose, I would make this a four or five slide presentation. I would definitely have been happier splitting slide #2 into two slides. The neat thing is that I can jump between slides if I really wanted to.
